I had the same problem some time ago. It is due to SE/30's bug.
The only work-around to run the new X on SE/30 is to replace Xmac68k (the
X server of Xserver12 in /usr/X11R6/bin) with Xmacbsd (the older version
of X server from Xmacbsd.960127.tar.gz)
Xmacbsd.960127 is coded to get over "mmap" problem of SE/30, but
Xserver12 seemingly is not.
