Thanks for the reply, Scott.

Results: still broken with the color kernel.

I grabbed the color kernel.  I get the same 
slot_noint() slot e reports if the NIC card is in a lower
slot.  

If I swap the two cards:

macvid0 at nubus0: Radius FPD
Possible modes: 0x80
SM: Unknown Slot manager routine 0x2f
unknown OS trap 0xa08d, no trap address available
panic: mrg_aline_super()
Stopped at _Debugger+0x6: unlk a6


So, looks like I need a new video card.
