Cool.  This should work just fine.

Sounds good so far.

That's good, too.

Nooooo!  This would be the big problem.  You don't want to run the login 
program before you've set up your /etc/passwd file.

Although I don't know why no password isn't working (it should on a 
default system), you might want to type "exit" at the prompt instead of 
login.  This will boot you fully into multi-user mode.  From there you 
should be able to log in as root and do a passwd to change the password 
to whatever you wish.
