EDITOR is an environment variable.  You might want to read the man page 
for the shell you use (sh, csh, tcsh, whatever..), or, better yet, get a 
good beginning UNIX/UNIX system administration book.  The mailing list 
archives have tons of suggestions.  To run unix at home, you really have 
to know both sides of the system (user and administrator).
