I have posted messages several times....andd i still need some help.
situation:
i have a IIvx, 20/80 with a 425 MB external drive. I use
netbsd.GENERIC#7 as my kernel and booter 1.9.0 (booter 1.9).
i am having problems making my machine work with my external hard drive.
since you have been talking about ncrscsi and quantum drive corruption,
i need your help. i get this error during the boot:
--cut here--
sd1 at scsibus0 targ 5 lun 0: <QUANTUM, PD425S, 535A> SCSI2 0/direct
fixed
sd1: ncrscsi0 : Resetting SCSI-bus (Timeout waiting for phase-change)
ncrscsi0 : Resetting SCSI-bus (Timeout waiting for phase-change)
sd1: could not mode sense (4); using fictitious geometry
406MB, 406 cyl, 64 head, 32 sec, 512 bytes/sec
--cut here--
cutting the nubus apple ethernet card init, and a "type 3 chip" init
(which looks like it went fine...), i get:
--cut here--

i have no clue why i get that error at the end that dumps me in the
debugger, but it's probably because my hard drive isn't working
properly!
so, as suggested, i boot into single user. i still get the timeout
phase-change error, but my system lives long enough, as the screen asks
for a root device (i type "sd1") and i press return for the default sh.
the "#" prompt moves to the middle of the screen, and i "clear" the
screen and run "fsck". the system finds those incorrect block counts for
both 41696 and 41697, which i thought it already corrected. i tell the
system to correct them anyway. i get this:
--cut here--

now, i type "reboot", and the machine does a hard reboot back into the
MacOS. when i now try to boot back into NetBSD in multi-user, i get
this:

after i don't type stuff for a minute, i get that sd1(ncrscsi0:5:0): not

whenever i try to log in as something, root, or just some made up
username, i get this error:
--cut here--
Oct 4 15:43:07 myname getty[85]: /usr/bin/login: Input/output error
--cut here--
this error seems to be hardware-type, like the kernel doesn't know how
to reset this device on the SCSI bus, but am absolutely CLUELESS on what
i could try to fix this. if you have ANY clue what went wrong, or what's
going wrong, I'd *really* appreciate a response
many thanks in advance...
