Following up to my own mail (if noone else does 8-):

I've built an sbc kernel with a 500 ms delay before the SCSI bus reset and
have experienced a third crash withe the same symptoms - so the delay can't
be the whole story.

In all three cases, the media tests with the MacOS formatter reported
exactly 15 consecutive sectors as damaged; the media were newfs'ed with a
block size of 8K.
