I'm not sure what you mean by "directly," as I'm unaware of any system
that can actually do the initial boot besides MacOS/"system software". 
You can get a reasonably close approximation with the appropriate booter
settings and an alias to the booter in your Startup Items folder.  (One of
my machines doesn't have a monitor, so I use this to boot with a serial
console.)
