I accidentally deleted the original message. Sorry.
Well, trying a direct gunzip was a failure, but I was able to get two
binaries out using tar -x -f tex.tar.gz --ungzip (substitutionf the full
filename, of course).
I don't know what else (if anything) is supposed to be in the
distribution, but I've re-tarred those and gzipped 'em and stuck 'em back
in contrib/tex under tex.new.tar.gz.
