I finally got around to reading documentation on and playing with
dt... all I can say is: cool! (Been spending all of my time w/ X)
However, though it doesn't seem to hurt anything, when the VT's open, I
get the same weird error I get w/ many diffent ttypn (where n is a
number) opening activities:

mesg: /dev/ttyp4: Operation not permitted

While I don't get this opening xterms, it also happens when I do a
M-X shell in jove, but with the following message:

Warning: no access to tty (Inappropriate ioctl for device).
Thus no job control in this shell.
mesg: /dev/ttyp3: Operation not permitted

Anyone have any idea what I screwed up?
