What particular disadvantages are there with the sbc driver?  And also,
are there any kernels available (precompiled) with sbc, and if so, which
ones?

As for the drive type, it's a brand-spanking-new Quantum 2.5" 514 Meg
drive.  It worked fairly well (with the exception of a little damage
during a couple of crashes) until fairly recently, then it just died.
