Francis, double check your,
/etc/hosts
named
/etc/resolv.conf
MacTCP
/etc/ppp/options
/etc/ppp/ip-up
/etc/netstart

I think best is to proxyarp in /etc/rc.local by means of arp -s, but...
i'm not totally sure given the latest pppd changes (i haven't used yet).

If it still faills, send there setups and i'll try to help,
