My first for ages and ages though, so I'm not all that bothered (this is a
-current kernel).

The incidence dropped to nil when I started using dt - so I suspect the
console package causes some problems..

Anyway, I'm not pushing it so hard now I have ethernet support ;-) just the
link to my ISP.
