I'm running my SE/30 with 20M of RAM without any problem.  My guess is
that you have "RAM auto-sizing" (or something similar) check box NOT
checked.  It crossed my mind that you didn't set 32-bit address mode,
but if that were the case, it'd give you a different error even if the
RAM size was 8M.
