>From previous mail messages, am I correct in believing that it is not
possible to have a getty hanging off the serial port and still be able
to dial out?

In other words, if I wanted to be able to dial into my machine to log in,
but also to have a cron job that dials up an ISP and brings in/sends out
mail, etc. I would either need another modem and phone line, or as
part of the cron job, enough smarts to change /etc/ttys, kill the getty,
change the permissions of /dev/ttyd0, dial out, etc, then restore
everything. Correct?

As a followup, I have my Mac (an LC III, 10M ram, 1G drive) connected
to a SupraFax 144LC modem - and I managed enough fiddling to get it
set up so that it wasn't trying to interpret the login messages from
getty and so that I could log in and out over the phone. However, I
can't seem to get tip to work correctly if I supply a phone number
on the command line.

I would appreciate a pointer to a FAQ for this or a mail message with a
working set of /etc/* files (remote, phones, gettytab, phones, etc).

OB Good news - I may be able to get my hands on enough information to
create a reasonable /dev/audio for the mac... Am checking my sources.
