Ooof.  It should be.  At least, it's configured in my current GENERIC
kernels and I don't recall changing it any time in the recent past.

Have you looked at this any more?  I recommend checking /dev for the
files and making sure that the device major number is 8.  I'm not
sure what else off-hand.
