Hmm...okay I went back and picked up the 1.1 release Kernel and installed
it on a clean file system, along with the base11 and etc11 packages.

The boot process has become consistent...now it always hangs at exactly the
same point...just after loading the time daemon (?)  Not 100% sure if
that's what's loaded, but it's about five echo lines after I get out of
single-user mode with ^D.  I'll look at it to be sure.  Just before I did
this re-installation, the Generic #52 Kernel was hanging at exactly the
same point.  The Kernel I have loaded right now says Generic #47 when it
boots...

I'm working on it...looking forward to having the thing running.
