I was directly involved in the below two messages, but serial console via 
printer port doesn't work on mine either.. (which is why I originally 
thought it didn't work at all)  It DOES, however do echo just fine (up to 
where it always freezes)  I'm about to try the for_mays kernel w/ a 
serial console (PB 145 =) off of the modem port.. keeping my fingers crossed
