Ah....I think I've seen that before under Solaris when we were trying to 
set up dial-in PPP.  Your problem is almost definitely that one of the 
modems has echo switched on.  This means that when login starts up it is 
doing so using some modem response as the login name (like 'Connected at 
14400' for instance')  You need to switch off all of the echo and stuff 
like that on the PPP server and then it should work OK.
