After you save preferences, quit the program.  Then relaunch the booter.  
The changes should then stick.

Hmmm.  Try editing .profile and adding TERM=vt100, or something like 
that.  Not sure offhand.

I don't know about mounter possibilities, but under un*x, you could try 
getting a copy of the pine distribution and making a copy of pico.  It's 
not as powerful as bbedit, but, speaking only for myself, I think it's a 
lot easier to use than vi.

Hope that will help on at least a couple of the points.
