Because more boxes out the door means more boxes that *could* and at times 
*would* being running the MacOS and apps. It pumps market share for their 
architecture. Why is DEC assisting with the Linux Alpha port, to keep the s/w 
staff busy? Plus, anything that helps keep old boxes off the streets and/or in 
some small way maintains their resale value helps customer morale...if anyone in 
Cupertino nowadays keeps their titles long enough to appreciate those points.
