To answer both you and Joerg, I've tried -current GENERIC and -current 
jmcneill-pm GENERIC.  They both have the same problem as 4.0_RC3 (plugging 
in a umass device kills uhci with no messages). A acpi netbsd-3 kernel 
does not exhibit this.
