Thanks for the suggestion -- it lead us to the (in retrospect) 
obvious step of attaching a USB keyboard.  [Ironic, considering what 
we do to pay the bills.]

We disconnected the PS/2 keyboard and attached a USB keyboard.  The 
kbc write error still came up, as did "no /dev/console", but the USB 
keyboard works.  This means we should be able to break out of the 
install, get the dmesg, put it on a USB flash drive and (eventually) 
post something to the list.  More in a few days.  Because of existing 
infrastructure, if we're going to use this machine we need to get the 
PS/2 port working....
