I'm surprised, too -- I've been using Thinkpads with various BSDs --
first BSDi, then NetBSD since 1.5beta -- on Thinkpads starting around
1994 with the "Butterfly". The only problem I ever had involved high
memory on the 600, when using BSDi.

For fun, you may want to try a 3.0beta install CD.
