I've just tried booting with pxeboot and that didn't work properly, 
whereas booting off USB does work. So clearly the patch just about works 
for the USB case, but isn't quite enough to cover every case. This makes 
it worth trying biosboot.

The easiest way to make *sure* you've got it right is to build a full 
release.
