One thing you can try is to disable USB 2.0 in the BIOS.
I am running 2.0 on an D845GERG2L motherboard. If I enable USB 2 it
works, but my CF reader does not reliably probe at boot-time, and I have
to physically unplug and replug it in to get it to attach.
I do get a much faster transfer rate if I use USB 2 than with USB 1.0.
