I don't have that laptop with me anymore but I was able to install
NetBSD 2.0 on a Presario R3000 without any errors - definetly no
keyboard problems.  After installation trying to use the Broadcom 54g
wireless adapter was a lost cause though - I had to resort to using
Debian and NDISWrapper.  You won't be able to use FreeBSD on that
laptop either until 5.4 is released:
