There was a quick 0.3 of second flash of "segmentation fault" towards 
the end of installation and then it died.  Sorry I can't tell you more 
than that.  Logs say nothing.

That's the one !  I was trying to use 'term' instead of 'TERM'.  

Thanks to everyone for replying.  I'll get round to installing some 
software next and see what goes up the creek with that.
