I just tested using only my patch to ac97.c, without applying any patch to 
auich.c (thus NOT forcing the cold reset, nor checking just ICH_P(C?)R)  
That by itself seems sufficient to fix the problem as well.  Is that a more 
universal solution?  I can't see it negatively affecting other 
implementations.
