Hm, of course, now that I have something concrete to try, I can
no longer reproduce this crash.  I'm now trying to remember
all the other factors (which particular hw, whether I had a raid1
set) that I didn't think were relevant at the time.
(it took me almost a week to get the message to port-i386; I think
it was being spam filtered for being too long :)

Anyway, thanks for the pointers.  I'll try a little more to reproduce it.
