Ok.  It sounds quite.. unreliable to have the buffer cache "allocate" all
free RAM and then things like umass fail.

It must have gotten much worse because I had never seen it before (and I
use CF cards regularly).

IMHO, CF cards are unusable at the moment, which makes 2.0 unusable for me.
I was going to install 2.0 beta on my laptop to see if I have any serious
problems there, but then I would have no machine able to read CF cards, so I
can't do it.  Sigh.
