on my own machine (a x30 laptop from ibm) i only
have "shutdown -hp" working with apm compiled in
the kernel. it also works fine with acpi. i also
have a desktop machine where the apm device is
also found and shutdown works properly there.

can you try to build or try a kernel with the
apm enabled and then try shutdown -hp there ?

what is your machine : a laptop one ? desktop ?
