I have no theories on the keyboard stuff (and I believe that 
init will create /dev/console if all else fails -- from a 30-second 
glance at the code, in an MFS file system if necessary).  But given the 
problems with disklabel, partitioning, and the failure when building on 
another machine, might there be a BIOS geometry problem?
