That's a good suggestion.

But I'm fairly sure.

(a) Since writing I tried the original install, in a single filesystem
(I'm glad I did the snapshots).

(b) I checked /dev and it looked right.

(c) I booted from the install floppies (where the keyboard works fine),
mounted the filesystem, chrooted, and did a "MAKEDEV all" and retried.

None of this helped any.

Probably.

Anyway, I'll be investigating further.  Maybe I can make /sbin/init a
shell script that ktraces the real init or something - I'll see.
