shopping can be so much fun..

My advice is to check out www.googlegear.com, and to re-use parts if you
have spares. I like to buy brand name Intel motherboards and CPUs because
they tend to work well together.

Here are the parts I bought at the beginning of March 2003 to put together
my current system:

	$112.00 (240876) Intel D845GERG2L i845GE P4 (533FSB) Skt478 DDR
	M-ATX Motherboard w/Audio, Video, LAN
	$ 46.99 (143208) Googlegear 601AEB-420DF Mid Tower Entry Level
	Server Case (Black)
	$191.00 (80648) Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 Processor (Northwood) 2.53GHz,
	533MHz FSB, Socket 478
	$ 66.00 (80065-K) Kingston KVR333X64C25/512 512MB DDR333 PC2700
	$ 66.00 (80065-K) Kingston KVR333X64C25/512 512MB DDR333 PC2700
	$ 71.00 (711006-017) Western Digital Caviar WD400BB 40GB
	7200RPM ATA/100 Hard Drive
	$ 62.99 (324015) Abit Siluro GF4 MX 440SE GeForce4 MX440 AGP 4X
	64MB DDR Video Card w/TV-Out
	$  0.00 re-used old monitor, keyboard, mouse, speakers, cd-rw
	-------
	$615.98 total cost

It has been working nicely, with few issues:
	* had to backport the ICH4 audio from -curent to 1.6.1.
	  auich0 at pci0 dev 31 function 5: i82801DB (ICH4) AC-97 Audio
	* am not using 3D acceleration in X

Here are some parts I was looking at for a budget-oriented friend a month
or so ago:
	$ 79.00 (143208) Mid Tower Entry-Level Server Case (Black)
	$110.99 (240896) Intel D865GLCL i865G 800FSB M-ATX audio/video/lan
	$169.50 (80646-800) Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 Processor 2.4GHz,
	800MHz FSB, Socket 478
	$ 99.00 (80098-2) Kingston KVR400X64C3A/512 512MB DDR400 PC3200
	L3 DIMM 3-3-3 (800FSB)
	$ 99.00 (80098-2) Kingston KVR400X64C3A/512 512MB DDR400 PC3200
	L3 DIMM 3-3-3 (800FSB)

Cheers,

Ben
