Could be a speed/duplex negotiation problem.
Try to force the speed/duplex mode via ifconfig:
ifconfig <if> media 100baseTX
or
ifconfig <if> media 10baseT
or
ifconfig <if> media 100baseTX-FDX
or
ifconfig <if> media 10baseT-FDX

and see if one of these modes helps.
