Is there a trick to booting the ThinkPad 355?

I cannot get NetBSD 1.6.1 to boot the 355. The bootloader runs, but before
the kernel can print a single message, the machine hangs.  I have tried
the boot1.fs/boot2.fs combo and I have tried to boot a compressed kernel
from DOS using "dosboot netbsd~1.gz." The kernel hangs either way.
