I've been setting up a 1.6 box and compiling the ports from source using
make install. Everything seems to be going well so far but I now notice
some apps bomb with this problem; specifically bluefish and rox. I
suspect it may have something to do with both gtk+ and gtk2+ on the
system. I may remove gtk2+ and associated dependents then re-install gtk+
and fontconfig. Anyone else see this?

I've not had success on google or reading the man page yet but I could
have missed something. Here is the full error:

Xlib: extension "RENDER" missing on display "0:0"
No fonts found; this probably means that the fontconfig
library is not correctly configured. You may need to
edit the fonts.conf configuration file. More information
about fontconfig can be found in the fontconfig(3) manual
page and on http://fontconfig.org
