anyway - "hackish option" make lots of sense to be able to ONCE try other
than default.

for example you compile new kernel remotely on machine 1000km from you, no
one there are able to help you except to press reset button.

you name new kernel netbsd-test

do

reboot -- 'wd0a:netbsd-test'

if it doesn't get up for 5 minutes you call someone to just press reset,
then it loads old kernel that works.

if it does you rename netbsd-test to netbsd
