I used to like the always-on feature the fan of my Toshiba Tecra 8000
offered. Toshiba had Windows software to do this but for other systems
(at least Linux) there was some free software available to do this.
This machine would run too hot for use on your lap and the always-on
feature really made a difference. I don't think having your fan always
on could void any warranty. Or, put differently, I wouldn't buy a
machine where warranty would be void if the fan was on continuously or
where the machine would die (permanently) if the fan was not on (this
same toshiba would just turn itself off if it got too hot, fan running
or not).

Just my 0.02 Euros.
