Hi Joe,
I have a GeForce 2 MX 400, and when X would unexpectedly quit (due to a
configuration file mistake) it would return the console and make it much
dimmer (like what you describe). Since i solved the configuration error, X
hasn't ever froze on me and when i normally shut down X, the console window
is fine. Have you checked the X logs? maybe when you close X, for some
reason it has an error and isn't able to shut down properly then dies. I'm
running NetBSD 1.6 and i'm not and XFree86 4.1.0, i think.
