Following up to myself to also place the answer into the archives.

  thanks to information received privately, the problem is now solved:
The actual culprit is the int10 initialization, adding

option "noint10" "true"

to the device section of the configuration solved the problem; after a
bit of mode twiddling, I now have X11 running on my system.
