Hi,

it seems that I found a workaround for the problem with X trashing the
console (PR 18386).

The result from loads of kernel builds and reboots is:
Starting from GENERIC, remove APM, PERFCTRS, MTRR and agp.

This seems to keep the console healthy. But a longer test is still to be
done to see if this helps in long term.
