It's wierder than that even:

	euclid 10> less < /kern/msgbuf | wc
	     203    1168  131056
	euclid 11> less /kern/msgbuf | wc
	"/kern/msgbuf" may be a binary file.  See it anyway? y
	       0       1  123171
	euclid 12> dmesg | wc
	     203    1168    7885
	euclid 13> expr 7885 + 123171
	131056			<- same as first "wc"!

no explaination though at this stage....
