I had exactly the same problem on my cheapo work PC. I had to do an install minus man, misc and X and then go back and add them as a second pass.

My problem seems to be disk related - I get loads of crashes during heavy disk IO, but that also happens when running Linux. Installing something like QT takes about 10 runs of make after each segfault.

Solid as a rock on my Thinkpad 600X. If only the Xircom RealPort Combo Modem part worked I'd be laughing.
