So I upgraded my _old_ notebook from 1.5x to 1.6x and things generally
are fine.

X seems to be a problem though. I got xf86config to
generate a new XF86Config and checked that the horizontal and vertical
frequencies were the same as I had with the old X.

A very similar config is working fine on my desktop.
On the toshiba though X decides to use its builtin 320x200 mode.
BTW the old X thought that the beast has 1024K of video ram, whereas
4.2.0 thinks it has only 64K? Setting VideoRam in the Device section
seems to be ignored.

Anyone got this working?

Thanks
