You might want to run the IBM disk tools against the disk. It's a disk image on the IBM site - self booting PC-DOS disk that contains media analysis tools.

I had 'growing areas' of bad blocks on my 20GB disk. After I ran the disk tools (Note: it is COMPLETELY DESTRUCTIVE),  I have not had a single error again in 6 months, so far so good :)
