I get about 35MB/Sec during a "ttcp" run with this hardware in spite of
the problem with gsip(4).

You don't switch to Gigabit ethernet because you have a box which can
saturate that bandwidth. You switch because your box can saturate Fast
ethernet. And that box definitely is able to do so.
