I am sad to report that tweaking the jvm.cfg file did me no good ... the 
libraries for the classic VM are no longer being distributed =(

Thanks for the suggestion though.

I'm going to fidget with sysctl next, we'll see =)

p.s. I also tried the "unlimit" command ... no dice =\

You might want to make sure you're using the classic vm, as similar messages 
were returned by 1.3.1 when trying to use the client, server or hotspot vms. 
In 1.3.1, you could edit $JAVA_HOME/jre/lib/jvm.cfg, and make
sure -classic was the first of the vm types. This may also work with 1.4 but 
I haven't tried it (yet). Let us know how you get on !
