Hi everyone,

I've been using NetBSD on a couple of different boxes for a few years (Amigas, PCs), and had 1.5.1 working fine on a Thinkpad 560. However, I've recently installed 1.5.2 on a Sony Vaio PCG-FX401, and am having a couple of odd problems with it ...

1) Sound. The sound chip is reported as a "VIA82C686A AC'97 Audio (rev 0x50)" on startup. Sound works fine under WinXP and Linux, but under NetBSD it's like a scratched record; the first couple of seconds of sound play over and over for the correct length of the MP3 (say). Same results whether using mpg123, Linux RealPlayer, audioplay, or cat'ing to the audio device. This seems to be a fairly common chip, so I can't think everybody's got this problem with it...

2) mbufs. Every couple of days, something somewhere starts chewing through mbufs at the rate of three-four headers every 5 seconds (according to systat), and after a couple of minutes networking locks solid. Sometimes the mbufs get deallocated, but it seems fairly random, and the only sure way to get things back on track is a reboot. What's the best way to work out what process(es) are allocating mbufs ?

Other info: the 1.5.1 generic kernels just wouldn't boot on the Vaio at all, and that's why I upgraded to 1.5.2. Using a bootable Linux CD will also lock solid unless you can interrupt the boot process an use "expert noauto" to stop Linux trying to autodetect hardware. The oddness seems to centre around Cardbus support on the machine (I sometimes get "Bad Vcc" error messages on shutdown; Linux locks autodetecting PCMCIA gear).

Apart from the sound and mbufs problems, everything is pretty solid !

I've attached my config file and dmesg output, in case it gives somebody a clue what's going on here.

Thanks for any help,

- Tony
