# I'm been upgrading my software and hardware piece by piece over the
# past few weeks, and this afternoon I successfully upgraded to 1.5.2
# on my Pentium I. Everything seemed to be fine. This evening, I moved
# the hard disk into another machine, a Pentium III with an integrated
# video controller, and now I have a tiny little problem with X: the
# root window never seems to redraw, so anything that has been drawn
# there remains until it is overwritten by some other application's
# window. Dragging an xterm across the screen makes an impressive
# looking pattern of repeated frames. :-) "xsetroot" has no effect.

Make sure you start X with -depth 16 or -depth 24; 8-bit is horrid
on a TNT2 (says the other TNT2 owner).

# The video controller is identified by the kernel as "vga1 at pci1 dev
# 0 function 0: Nvidia Corporation Aladdin TNT2 (rev. 0x20)". I picked
# the XF86_SVGA server for it. I append what the X server says.

Run xf86config. You'll thank yourself for it in the morning.

# Other oddities: the icons show up as just a shape with the icon's
# background color -- hmm, I opened and closed one, and it turned black,
# but I dragged it around, and after it went behind another window and
# came back out, it went back to its background color. And I can use
# control-alt-Fn to change to another console, but ctl-alt-F1 gives me
# the "text window" (X server messages); I must use ctl-alt-F5 to get
# the actual X display back -- I can't remember if that's normal, but I
# think that ctl-alt-F1 used to get me back to the X display.

That's correct; if you wish to use ctl-alt-F1, you must edit /usr/X11R6/
lib/X11/xdm/Xservers (if you're using xdm) to start up on vt01, and turn
off the getty on console/ttyE0.

# My
# "mclock" is not showing up properly either. Konqueror is kind of
# flakey: some things show up, some don't.
#
# My xterms work very nicely, though, so I am able to get some work done!
#
# I can't help but think that one of the "XAA" (acceleration?) options
# mentioned in the printout below is defaulting to the wrong thing, but
# which one, and how to fix it, I don't know. I'd appreciate if some
# kind X guru would save me "a week in the library" and tell me what is
# wrong with my X configuration!

Try the above; how do you start X? Do you use xdm or startx?

# Anne.
